The Watchmaking Artistry of NOMOS Glashütte
A decisive step in the company's history was the development of its own movements. Initially, the company used Swiss movements but refined them in its own workshop. In 2005, the brand reached a milestone: with the introduction of its first in-house calibre, the Alpha hand-wound movement, NOMOS Glashütte officially became a manufacturer. From that moment on, the company developed more and more in-house movements, which have been manufactured in Glashütte ever since.
With functionality for everyday use, water sports, and all kinds of adventures, the various models offer the right watch for everyone. This is entirely in line with the company's guiding principle: beautiful, high-precision watches for everyone.
The History of NOMOS Glashütte
The brand's history began in 1990, immediately after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when Roland Schwertner founded the company in the traditional watchmaking town of Glashütte. While many long-established Glashütte manufacturers were incorporated into international corporations after German reunification, NOMOS Glashütte decided to go it alone. The goal was to develop high-quality mechanical watches with a modern, minimalist design—a combination of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.
From the outset, NOMOS focused on a clear design language inspired by Bauhaus aesthetics. The first models were designed in collaboration with renowned designer Susanne Günther, whose minimalist design concept continues to shape the collections today. The first watches from NOMOS Glashütte—including the Tangente, Ludwig, Orion, and Tetra—laid the foundation for the brand's style and quickly became classics.
What Makes NOMOS Glashütte Stand Out?
With the presentation of the NOMOS swing system in 2014, the manufactory achieved a breakthrough in craftsmanship. This innovation made NOMOS Glashütte largely independent of external suppliers and strengthened the manufactory's technical expertise. In addition to technical advances, the brand also expanded its portfolio: sporty models such as the Ahoi and Club Sport, as well as modern designs such as the Metro and Autobahn, proved that NOMOS has mastered the balance between tradition and innovation.
Today, NOMOS Glashütte is one of Germany's leading watch manufacturers and is internationally renowned for its precise mechanics, outstanding craftsmanship, and avant-garde design. Despite its global success, the company remains true to its principles: every watch is manufactured in Glashütte according to the strict rules of Saxon watchmaking. Each model combines the highest quality with thoughtful design. Thus, NOMOS remains synonymous with timeless mechanics characterized by uncompromising precision and elegant restraint.
