The Watchmaking Artistry of Girard-Perregaux
Girard-Perregaux has made a significant contribution to the development of haute horlogerie over the centuries. Today, it is a manufacture that never ceases to amaze watch lovers with its talent and innovation.
The History of Girard-Perregaux
Girard-Perregaux is one of the oldest and most renowned watch manufacturers in Switzerland and can look back on a long history dating back to 1791. It was in this year that the watchmaker and visionary Jean-François Bautte founded his company in Geneva, which quickly distinguished itself with exceptionally fine pocket watches. Girard-Perregaux still pursues this approach today.
Constant Girard was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1825 and founded his own company in 1847 after completing his apprenticeship as a watchmaker. In 1856, the manufacture was renamed following the marriage of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux, giving rise to the name Girard-Perregaux. This union had a lasting impact on the brand and combined technical expertise with entrepreneurial foresight.
An important milestone in the history of Girard-Perregaux was the introduction of the iconic tourbillon with three golden bridges in 1867. This complication became the hallmark of the manufacture and laid the foundation for the brand's international reputation. In the decades that followed, Girard-Perregaux established itself as a pioneer in the art of watchmaking, among other things by developing the first high-precision quartz movement in 1971, which set the standard of 32,768 Hz—a frequency that is still used for quartz watches worldwide today.
The manufacture has always understood how to combine the tried and tested with progress. With iconic collections such as the Laureato, the Bridges and the Cat's Eye, the Girard-Perregaux brand has created timeless classics that combine mechanical excellence with modern style.
The manufacture remains true to its philosophy of mastering technical challenges and developing the art of watchmaking to the highest level. This combination of creativity, craftsmanship and appearance makes Girard-Perregaux one of the most influential brands in haute horlogerie.
