The Watchmaking Artistry of Hermès

With its distinctive savoir-faire, Hermès began producing watches in 1928, debuting the innovative Hermès Ermeto in collaboration with Swiss watchmaker Movado. Unique in both form and function, this timepiece blended the Maison’s elegant design language with Swiss precision and reliability. A milestone followed in 1978 with the launch of the Arceau collection, designed by Henri d’Origny, which remains one of the brand’s most iconic models.

The History of Hermès

Founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès in Paris, initially as a small harness workshop on Rue Basse-du-Rempart, Hermès quickly earned a reputation for crafting durable and elegant pieces admired by European aristocracy. His commitment to excellence was recognized at the Paris World’s Fair in 1867, setting the foundation for a legacy defined by quality and craftsmanship.

Under Charles-Émile Hermès, the workshop moved in 1880 to 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where the Maison began producing fine leather saddles and accessories sought after across Europe. By 1922, under Émile Hermès, the brand expanded its range to include lifestyle products, transforming from a saddlery into a house of luxury.

In 1927, Hermès introduced its first timepieces, created in collaboration with leading watchmakers and in-house artists—embodying the Maison’s devotion to beauty and precision. A defining moment came in 1996, with the launch of its first in-house mechanical movements, securing Hermès’ place in haute horlogerie.

Today, Hermès continues to grow its collections through innovation, craftsmanship, and timeless design, remaining true to its core values: creative freedom, sustainability, and a deeply human-centered philosophy.
