Centuries of accumulated knowledge, decades of experience, years of refinement, and hundreds of hours of dedicated craftsmanship are reflected in every Montblanc watch.
The Watchmaking Artistry of Montblanc
The watchmakers at Montblanc’s sites in Villeret and Le Locle possess skills passed down through generations, infusing pride, passion, and soul into every timepiece. Since the late 19th century, Montblanc watches for men and women have been coveted accessories among the style-conscious.
The History of Montblanc
Montblanc’s watchmaking legacy is rooted in two manufactures located in Le Locle and Villeret in the Swiss Jura. The brand’s horological journey began in 1858 when Charles-Ivan Robert opened a watchmaking workshop in Villeret - arking the start of the historic Minerva era. One of the brand’s early breakthroughs was a crown-winding system that eliminated the need for the winding keys used in that era. This innovation helped make Montblanc pocket watches increasingly popular by the late 19th century.
Minerva’s success led it to become a leader in precision timekeeping during the 20th century, especially known for its stopwatches and chronographs that measured time intervals with extreme accuracy. A notable highlight from the 1910s was a chronograph capable of measuring time down to 1/100th of a second. Another milestone was the creation of a hand-wound monopusher chronograph, later released in an ultra-slim version.
Today, Montblanc continues to merge its 160+ years of Minerva heritage with modern technologies. Product lines such as 1858, Heritage, and Star Legacy connect past and present through timeless design and technical innovation.
What Makes Montblanc Stand Out?
While the look of Montblanc watches consistently nods to the brand’s heritage, modern features are a natural part of the offering. A watch that appears steeped in history might in fact be a Montblanc smartwatch—doubling as a fitness or health tracker in addition to keeping time.
Though all Montblanc watches share a common legacy and superior quality, today’s collection spans a wide variety of timepieces differing in both design and function. Alongside mechanical watches, Montblanc also produces smartwatches, adding a thoroughly modern dimension to its legacy of craftsmanship.
