The History of Hamilton
Founded in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the Hamilton brand began by producing pocket watches renowned for their quality and precision. These characteristics earned them the title “The Watch of Railroad Accuracy.” The precise movements ensured the punctuality of American rail traffic. Hamilton watches played a major role in defining the requirements that would later characterize “Railroad Watches.”Â
During World War I, Hamilton responded to the needs of soldiers by introducing the first men's wristwatches in 1917, developed from existing pocket watch movements. This adaptation marked the transition from pocket watches to wristwatches in the United States and once again demonstrated the American spirit of innovation that still characterizes the brand today.Â
During World War II, civilian production was halted to focus entirely on manufacturing timepieces for the US military. This commitment to supporting the armed forces was rewarded with five Army-Navy “E Awards” for excellence in production. Today, the brand remains proud of its military heritage and combines this historical expertise with Swiss precision movements that are appreciated by military experts and history enthusiasts alike.Â
Driven by the technophile spirit of the 1950s, Hamilton introduced the Ventura, the world's first battery-powered wristwatch. In the 1970s, the brand introduced the first LED digital watch, the Pulsar, which revolutionized the watch industry.Â
Today, Hamilton watches combine their historical background with the craftsmanship of Swiss watchmaking tradition: as a member of the Swatch Group, the manufacturer benefits from state-of-the-art production technology and reliable automatic movements, such as those from ETA. Since production was completely relocated to Switzerland, all models bear the Swiss Made label, a guarantee of precision, quality, and longevity.Â
